Williamsburg man accused in Newport News carjacking, abduction case

Two men are being held without bail facing charges, after being accused of an early morning carjacking and abduction Wednesday, May 9 at a Newport News convenience store.

Joseph Jerome Dupree, 20, of the 100 block of Bethune Drive in Williamsburg, and Desmond De’Andre Brown, 19, of the 600 block of Ridley Circle in Newport News, were being held at the Newport News City Jail on a host of charges. Both suspects were charged with robbery, carjacking, abduction, use of a firearm in the commission of robbery, abduction and carjacking and conspiracy, according to the Newport News Police Department release.

Newport News police responded at 1:11 a.m. Wednesday to a robbery in progress at Hawkins Quick Stop, 3208 Madison Ave., Newport News. At the scene, officers were told that a man in the cab of a semi-truck had just been robbed and carjacked. According to a report, witness descriptions of the truck led to its discovery near Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard. Officers were able to stop the truck in the 500 block of Randolph Road, where the suspects fled on foot, the report said. The victim, a 52-year-old Newport News man, was found inside the truck, unharmed.

Both suspects were arrested after a brief foot pursuit. During a struggle, a gun reportedly fell from the waistband of one of the suspects, the report said. According to police, both suspects had property belonging to the victim when they were arrested.
