Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center offering summer activities and events

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center have a number of activities and events planned for the summer.

The two living-history museums will have regular artillery demonstrations and hands-on programs throughout the summer in addition to historically themed events in June, July and August.

At Jamestown Settlement, guests can learn about 17th century Virginia. The museum has replicas of first ships to bring settlers to North America and will teach guests about sailing between continents.

At the Yorktown Victory Center, guests will be able to witness the firing of artillery at 11 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. daily and learn about the steps involved. Guests will also have the chance to learn about the medical practices from the 1700s and take part in creating cloth used to mend wounds.

In June, the special program Seed to Stalk will teach visitors about agriculture in the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries. Guests will be able to tend plants and learn about farming techniques of early settlers.

Yorktown's Liberty Celebration on July 3 and July 4 will include tactical drills, military exercises and more in honor of the country's independence.

Pastimes of Colonial Virginia in August will include period games such as corncob darts, ninepins and quoits.

Beginning June 15 and running through Aug. 15, both the museums will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for ages 6 to 12, if purchasing tickets to both museums. Tickets for Jamestown Settlement are $15.50 for adults and $7.25 for ages 6 to 12. Yorktown Victory Center tickets are $9.75 for adults and $5.50 for ages 6 to 12.

The Jamestown Settlement is on Route 31, southwest of Williamsburg. Yorktown is on Route 1020, near the Yorktown Battlefield.
