City of Williamsburg issues tornado safety guide

Williamsburg officials have put together a series of tips for residents as tornado season begins.

According to officials, people should read, understand and follow these tips in the event of a tornado:

~ Residents are reminded that storm cellars and basements provide the best protection. If underground shelter is not available, residents should go to a windowless interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest floor possible, and stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Corners should be avoided because they attract debris;

~ Vehicles, trailers and mobile homes do not provide good protection. If in one when a tornado hits, plan to quickly get to a building with a strong foundation. When a tornado warning is issued, take cover in a safe location immediately, protecting bodies from flying debris with a heavy blanket, pillows, sofa cushions or mattress;

~ For people in an open building, such as a shopping mall, gym or civic center, when a tornado hits, try to get into a restroom or interior hallway. Place arms over your head;

~ If driving, get out of the vehicle and try to find shelter inside a sturdy building. A culvert or ditch can provide shelter if a substantial building is not nearby. Lie down flat and cover your head with your hands. Do not get under an overpass or bridge; and

~ In the event of a tornado, do not stay in mobile homes. Leave immediately and seek shelter inside a nearby sturdy building, or lie down in a ditch away from the home, covering your head with your hands.
