Peter Jacobi, Harry Cain triumph at the 18th VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championship

Peter Jacobi of Arlington and Harry Cain of Williamsburg both came away with wins in their respective age groups at the Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship on July 12 at The Homestead's Cascades Course.

Jacobi, 69, earned a 2-and-1 comeback win over George Owens of Virginia Beach in the 65-69 age group. Cain earned a 2-and-1 comeback win over Jack VardamanĀ of Hot Springs in the 70-74 age group.

Through 10 holes, Jacobi was down three but took advantage of strong play in his short game to put together a rally. He won the next three holes to tie the match and went on to secure the victory.

Jacobi was surprised he came out on top. "It's very unexpected," he stated in the release. "It feels good. I couldn't seem to do anything right on the front nine and then things turned around on the second nine. It was a tale of two matches."

Cain trailed by two through the first five holes, but used birdies on the sixth and eighth holes to tie the match. Cain came on strong on the second nine to earn the win.

"It was a close match all the way," Cain stated in the release. "I would say the main difference was that I made a few more putts than Jack."

Cain trailed in his semifinal match in the tourney, facing a four-hole deficit through 11 holes. But he rallied late to punch his ticket to the championship round.

Cain was pleased with his overall performance in the tournament. "I played in this age bracket five times and won four of them, so that feels pretty good," Cain stated in the release. "An old guy can still swing the club sometimes."

Bob Moyers, 76, of New Market won the 75-and-over category. He won his match in 20 holes against William Stallings of McLean.
