Athenian art takes center stage at Muscarelle Museum

The latest exhibition at the Muscarelle Museum of Art, opening Saturday, Aug. 18, features the development of Athenian pottery.

The Athenian Potters and Painters: Greek Vases from Virginia Collections exhibition is held in conjunction with the international Athenian Potters and Painters III conference being held at The College of William and Mary in September. Professor John Oakley is the organizer of the conference and the new exhibit. It is the first time classical antiquities have been presented at the museum.

Items loaned from private collections, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Chrysler Museum of Art date from 720 through 700 B.C. One of the pieces in the exhibit is a calyx krater, attributed to Nikias Painter, that depicts the birth of Athenian ruler Erichthonios.

Admission to the museum is $10 but free for museum members, faculty, staff and students of The College of William and Mary and children 12 years old and younger.

The Muscarelle Museum of Art is located on Jamestown Road at The College of William and Mary. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and closed Mondays. Docent tours are available weekends beginning at 1 p.m.
