Tribe men's soccer falls to VCU

The William and Mary men's soccer team was unable to generate offense in its second game of the year, falling 2-0 to Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 26 at Sports Backers Stadium.   The Tribe fell to 0-1-1 on the year. The Rams are 1-0-1.   "Although we are disappointed with the result, we are happy with the performance," William and Mary head coach Chris Norris said in a release. "We were much bolder tonight in terms of our attacking choices and our execution was better in the second half. I really like this group, and as long as we can keep an even keel and focus on our performance, we will be fine."   The Tribe had chances in the first half of play but could not capitalize. The Rams did seize their opportunities, though, and went in front 1-0 on a goal by Devon Fisher in the fourth minute.   The Tribe continued to take shots but couldn't find the back of the net. The Rams led 1-0 at the break.   William and Mary nearly tied the game at 1-1 but Roshan Patel's shot sailed over the goal. Will Smith had his shot deflected and Chris Albiston took a shot that went wide of the goal.   VCU finished off the scoring in the 88th minute. William and Mary goalie Bennett Jones started in goal and made four saves.   The Tribe held an 18-13 edge in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. William and Mary also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.   William and Mary will return to action Saturday, Sept. 1 when it battles Richmond at Martin Family Stadium in a 7 p.m. encounter.   For more on Tribe athletics, visit tribeathletics.com.
