Three second-half goals lift Tribe past Richmond

The William and Mary women's soccer team bested Richmond on Wednesday night in a 3-0 win.   William and Mary took control of the game in the second half, scoring three goals in a 10-minute span, to put the victory in the bag.   Senior Erin Liberatore scored first, followed by goals from junior Dani Rutter and senior Mallory Schaffer.    Richmond was competitive early, taking the majority of shots in the first half, including a fifth-minute shot on goal by sophomore Ashley Williams. Richmond took 11 shots, five corner kicks and two shots on goal in the first half, all shut down by the Tribe's freshman goalkeeper Caroline Casey.   Casey played all 90 minutes of the contest, needing just those two saves to record her first career shutout.   William and Mary picked up the lagging pace in the second half, generating 14 shots against the Spider defense. But not until the 80th minute would the Tribe break through with Liberatore's goal into the bottom right of the Richmond net. Rutter soon doubled the lead with her punch in, the junior's first goal of the young season. Schaffer then closed out the offensive show with the third and final goal, her team-leading third goal of the season.    Overall, William and Mary had a 15 shot advantage over the Spiders, 25-10, and topped Richmond in shots on goal, 10-2.    The win evened up the Tribe season at 2-2, while the Richmond Spiders fell to a winless 0-4 record.    The next William and Mary women's soccer match will be on the road against the Auburn Tigers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2. Live statistics will be available online through TribeAthletics.com. Live video will be available through Auburn athletics for a fee of $9.95.
