High school football: York defeats Warhill in error-ridden game

The Warhill High School's football team forced four turnovers but negated that effort with four turnovers of its own in a 34-8 loss to York at Cooley Field.

The Falcons improved to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the district.

Elijah Said paced the victory as he rushed for 148 yards on a night when York churned out 310 rushing yards as a team. Marcus Wakelyn added 73 yards and three touchdowns.

Warhill managed only 62 yards on the ground. The Lions trailed 14-6 at halftime and were hurt by the fact that Devonte Dedmon was less effective than usual because of an ankle injury. Dedon caught three passes for 28 yards.

Seth Thompson threw a TD pass in the opening half to account for Warhill's only offensive score. Warhill's other points came on a safety in the fourth quarter. York put 14 points on the board in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Warhill is now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the district.

Warhill will try to bounce back when it plays at Poquoson on Friday, Sept. 14. The Lions play at New Kent on Friday, Sept. 21 and play Bruton on Friday, Sept. 28.

York will play Tabb on Friday, Sept. 14 and will take on Jamestown on Friday, Sept. 21. The Falcons will play at Smithfield on Friday, Sept. 28.
