Green sparks Lafayette to high school football win over New Kent

Jalil Green rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns, providing the big lift needed for the Lafayette High School football team's offense in the Rams' 57-21 win over the Trojans at Waner Stadium Friday, Sept. 7.

Lafayette is unbeaten through two games and is 1-0 in the district.

Green scored his two TDs in the first half as he helped stake the Rams to a 21-0 advantage.

New Kent got on the board with 31 seconds left in the half on a nine-yard run by Trey Lee but Lafayette immediately answered the score with one of its own. Schekel Wallace scored on a one-yard run to give the Rams a 27-7 lead at halftime.

Luke Mechling threw a pair of TD passes in the second half for New Kent. He hit Chase Dunn on an 83-yard scoring strike and hooked up with Kevin Karoffa on a 45-yard TD pass.

Deacon Smith capped the scoring for Lafayette with a 19-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Lafayette rolled up 325 yards on the ground. New Kent finished with 261 yards of total offense. The Trojans, who fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the district, managed only 38 yards on the ground.

Lafayette will play at Bruton on Friday, Sept. 14 and will play at Smithfield on Friday, Sept. 21. The Rams play at Grafton on Saturday, Sept. 29.

New Kent will play Grafton on Friday, Sept. 14 and will play Warhill on Friday, Sept. 21. The Trojans play at Tabb on Friday, Sept. 28.

All games will begin at 7 p.m.
