Emily Johnson of Williamsburg serves on JMU's orientation team

Williamsburg resident Emily Johnson is working to help new students have a smooth transition into college life by serving as an orientation operations assistant on James Madison University's orientation team.

Orientation operations assistants work behind the scenes throughout the year assisting JMU guests, students, faculty and staff members, as well as the members of the orientation office's professional staff.

JMU's award-winning orientation team develops, coordinates and supervises the transitional needs of first-year and transfer students. The orientation office coordinates Summer Springboard, 1787 August Orientation and prepares publications, such as "The One Book," to assist new students and family members in their transition to JMU.

Johnson and other staff members work throughout the year to ensure incoming first-year and transfer students are provided with the resources, knowledge and peer connections for success at JMU, according to a news release.

Johnson is a senior majoring in social work.

James Madison University is in Harrisonburg.
