College of William and Mary welcomes new assistant lacrosse coach

Severna Park, Md., native Julie Gardner will join the College of William and Mary as the lacrosse team's new assistant coach.

According to a press release, Gardner graduated earlier this year with a degree in sociology from the University of Virginia, where she was a two-time All-American lacrosse player and helped the Cavaliers earn NCAA Tournament bids all four years. As a team captain she earned IWLCA All-South Region distinction twice, along with All-ACC honors during her final two seasons when she was chosen to the Tewaaraton Watch List.

Her main responsibilities as assistant coach will be recruiting, travel coordination, social media, alumni relations, practices and game day coaching.

"I am excited to have Julie join our staff this year," said head coach Brooke Ireland in the release. "Not only was she an amazing player throughout her collegiate career, she has been an advocate for the sport and has been instrumental in the development of many young players seeking to play at the next level. Julie brings much more than her experience on the field, she is vibrant and has a contagious personality that instills confidence in her players and their desire to achieve success. We are fortunate to have her as part of our Tribe family."

Aside from her recognition while playing in college, Gardner was a coach for the SPLAX club team in Severna Park for five years and she coached a high school team at the 2012 Brine Lacrosse Classic.

The College of William and Mary is a state-supported liberal arts institution with 6,071 undergraduate and 2,129 graduate students. The main campus is at 102 Richmond Road, Williamsburg.
