Dedmon clutch in Warhill's victory over Poquoson

There have been countless instances when players carry their teams to victory, for Devante Dedmon, that was a huge understatement on Friday night against the Poquoson High School football team.

The junior running back recorded 311 yards from scrimmage and was responsible for all four Warhill touchdowns as the Lions won 32-14, improving its season record to 2-1, in a AA Bay Rivers Conference high school football game Friday, Sept. 14 at Poquoson Middle School. The loss drops Poquoson to 2-2 on the year.

Dedmon ran for 211 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns and added two passes, completing both, for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Early on, the game looked like it was going to be a defensive struggle, with both defenses making goal-line stops to open the game. But with less than two minutes left in the first half, Dedmon finally broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.

After Poquoson tied the game to start the half, Warhill coach Billy Jarvis reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a touchdown when Dedmon hit Charlie Broaddus on an 80-yard pass on a halfback option to take back the lead.

With momentum on Warhill's side after the score, Dedmon did the rest, adding a pair of touchdown runs — including a 64-yard scamper — in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Lions.

Deadmon will try and lead Warhill to another victory in his next game when it faces off against New Kent in a division matchup at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 on the road.

Poquoson will try and make it back over .500 in its next game when they take on Tabb at home in a division game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
