William and Mary men's soccer falls to High Point

Despite a solid effort, the William and Mary men's soccer team fell 1-0 to High Point University on Sept. 25 in North Carolina.

The Tribe trailed 1-0 at halftime and was never able to come up with the tying goal. The team is now 2-5-2 on the season and will shift its attention to Colonial Athletic Association play. The Panthers raised their record to 9-0.

"Credit must be given to High Point," William and Mary head coach Chris Norris said. "They are a good team this year and started the game with far greater determination than we did. We dug ourselves an early hole, and although we worked hard to rectify it, we were not able to equalize."

High Point took the lead for good when Shane Malcolm scored a goal in the third minute of the game.

The Panthers took nine shots in the first half and the Tribe failed to get a shot off. Tribe goalie Bennett Jones racked up two saves in the first half.

William and Mary did its best to put together a rally in the second half.

Marcus Luster took a shot in the 46th minute, but it was turned away by a High Point defender. Roshan Patels attempted to head a ball into the net but the shot missed.

William and Mary finished with eight shots and High Point tallied 14 shots. The Panthers held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks as well.

The Tribe will try to bounce back when it battles Drexel in a CAA game on Friday, Sept. 28 at Martin Family Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
