William and Mary women's soccer defeats James Madison

Emory Camper and Nicole Baxter each scored a goal to lift the William and Mary women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association battle Sept. 23 at Martin Family Stadium.

Camper and Baxter scored their goals in the second half as the Tribe improved to 7-3 overall and to 1-0 in the CAA. The Dukes fell to 3-7 overall and to 1-1 in the league.

Caroline Casey came up big for William and Mary in the opening half, tallying three saves to help keep the James Madison offense in check. On one save, Casey leaped to her right to knock away a shot by Shannon Rano in the 31st minute.

The Tribe did not get a shot off in the opening half, while the Dukes tallied nine shots. It was a different story in the second half.

The Tribe took 10 unanswered shots to establish itself as the more aggressive team. Dani Rutter helped set up the first goal when she got the ball over to Camper, who scored her goal in the 72nd minute of action. Baxter took a lob pass from Leci Irvin to punch in the final goal of the game.

It was the second goal of the season for Baxter, who is only a freshman. Rutter tallied her second assist of the year and Irvin also came through with her second assist.

William and Mary, which is now 12-0-1 in conference home openers since 2000, finished the day with 13 shots while James Madison tallied 15 shots.

The Tribe will try to stay perfect in conference play when it battles George Mason at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Fairfax.
