William and Mary women's soccer team defeats UNCW, 3-1
Danni Rutter scored two goals — tying her career-high — to lead the William and Mary women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over North Carolina-Wilmington on Oct. 4 at Martin Family Stadium.
The Tribe trailed 1-0 before scoring the final three goals of the game to improve to 10-3 overall and to 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. North Carolina-Wilmington slipped to 7-6-1 overall and to 2-3 in the conference.
The Seahawks jumped on top 1-0 when Natalie Winslow scored in the seventh minute of action. Mallory Schaffer tied the game in the 23rd minute when she took a pass from Cortlyn Bristol and punched her ninth goal of the season.
Schaffer, the CAA Player of the Year in 2011, leads the team in goals scored. Bristol finished her day with a career-high three assists.
The Tribe and Seahawks went into halftime tied at 1, but William and Mary took control for good when Rutter scored her first goal of the game in the 46th minute off an assist from Bristol. Audrey Barry was also in on the assist as she initially sent the ball into the box before Bristol tapped it across to Rutter.
Rutter finished off the scoring in the 69th minute when she scored on a header. Bristol tallied an assist on that play as well.
The Tribe dominated offensively, taking 20 shots, while limiting the Seahawks to 11 shots. Caroline Casey made four saves in the win. The Tribe has won all 20 meetings against the Seahawks.
For Schaffer, her goal was the 40th of her career, tying her for sixth all-time in school history. Bristol now has 24 career assists and is sixth all-time in that category.
William and Mary will look to stay on a roll when it plays at Georgia State at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.
